Leadership Teams & Culture

The Culture Trap

HR isn't responsible for your culture. Leaders create it, every day.

Most leaders I've worked with understand that culture matters. Fewer understand who is actually responsible for it.

HR isn't responsible for your culture. HR can champion it, coach it and help people understand what it looks like in practice. But if the executive team isn't living it first — if the behaviours aren't natural and committed at the top — no amount of workshops or values posters will make it real.

Culture is defined by what the people at the top do when no one's watching. When it's authentic, people don't need to be reminded of it. They just know.

I've seen this in oil and gas projects with 350 people across 15 companies, and in small businesses with 16. The principle doesn't change with the headcount.

Get the executive team aligned first. Everything else follows.
