The Question That Changes Everything

What are we not talking about? The answer is usually where the real work is.

I've spent time with a lot of executive teams over the years. And I've noticed that the quality of the conversation changes completely when someone asks: "What are we not talking about?"

Not what are we doing well. Not what's on the agenda. What are we avoiding?

The answer to that question is almost always where the real work is. Most teams are busy. They discuss what's urgent. They tackle what's visible. The things that are uncomfortable, ambiguous or politically sensitive — those tend to wait. Until they can't.

The best leadership teams I've worked with are the ones who've learned to ask that question regularly. And who've built enough trust to answer it honestly. That's not easy. But it's worth it.
